Starting from 1st June, any file uploaded to Google Photos will be counted towards the 15GB default storage you get with every latest Google account. So, if you have a Google One subscription, then it will be counted towards that.
Google Photos to Discontinue Free Uploads on 1st June 2021
Formerly, only photos uploaded in the uncompressed “Original” quality preset would be counted towards your storage space, whereas pictures uploaded in the compressed HD quality preset were free. But from 1st June, all the photos will be treated equally. Here are a few things to take into consideration. Firstly, all the uploaded images before 1st June 2021 will not be counted. The change will apply to photos after the due date. But this does not mean you have to pay immediately on 1st June 2021. If you are not using your free 15GB that comes with each Google account, you can keep uploading pictures until it is filled up. Once your Google account is filled, you will have to subscribe to one of the Google One plans if you want to keep uploading images to your account. However, if you are inactive on the service for more than two years or over your storage limit for more than two years, then your Google might delete your data across multiple services. Moreover, if you have a Pixel smartphone, then you will continue to receive free and unlimited backup for your videos and images for a specific period. Besides this, in June 2021, Google will be offering a tool that will allow you to manage your backed up videos and photos and then select what you want to keep and what you want to discard. This tool will automatically highlight the content such as blurry or dark images or large videos that you might not want to keep. Furthermore, this change will apply to all Google pictures users across all platforms that include iOS, Android, and desktop.
